Literary culture in Cuba: Revolution, nation-building and the book

Literary Culture in Cuba explores the intersection of literary production, national identity, and state influence in post-revolutionary Cuba. Kumaraswami and Kapcia argue against prevalent narratives that depict the Cuban state as a monolithic oppressor of literature and emphasize instead the complex cultural landscape that enabled artistic expression and growth. The authors critically analyze the contributions of various literary movements and individuals, assessing the role of censorship and the cultural policies enacted by the government. Despite acknowledging the contradictions and challenges faced by writers, they celebrate the richness and dynamism of Cuban literary culture as integral to the revolutionary project.
